The best thing to do at this age is model healthy eating. Cook healthy foods—lean proteins, lots of fruit and veggies, healthy grains. Have ice cream sometimes. Don’t demonize certain foods unless due to allergy, pediatrician documented intolerance, or for religious or ethical reasons. If you feel you need more nutrition education in order to do this, I’d recommend seeing a dietitian for ideas yourself, without her, and then applying the knowledge you learn. I am very careful with my girls not to talk overmuch about food, and never about body issues. This goes for talking about myself too. Seeing us say we are fat, or constantly dieting, is the likeliest way to create food issues for them later. We always talk about nutrition, but only in that we choose healthy foods to give us energy and make us strong.2 Manage
