Health & Nutrition with Betsy

Betsy's Favorites For Keeping Athletes Healthy During Flu Season?

It's December! Your kids are finalizing routines and putting skills on hard mats and getting ready to hit hard concrete in their first competitions! It's a stressful time but it's also a FESTIVE time...with lots of fun holiday snacks that can also wreak havoc on your gymnasts tired muscles and bones.

Many of these treats are loaded with processed sugars which add ot inflammation and fatigue. Not to mention, it's flu season and a lot of our athletes are struggling with stuffy noses, sore throats and in some cases viruses. To keep kids strong and healthy this holiday season, here are a few of my nutrition tips!

CITRUS

It's Flu Season! What are you doing to fend off pesky viruses? Increase your gymnasts intake of lemons, limes and grapefruit for a vitamin C KICK!

KALE AND VIT K

One of the biggest gymnast complaints is sore aching joints and muscles. Foods rich in vitamin K increase

blood flow and decrease inflammation. Go for 3-4 servings a day of GREENS. BREAKFAST BEFORE BED!

Many athletes train late into the evening. A great dinner for a gymnast who arrives home late from training are EGGS! They are fast, loaded with protein and vitamin B12 Try a spinach omelet with salsa before bed!
